A guide to Environmental Product Declarations

What are Environmental Product Declaration reports?

Environmental Product Declarations (EPD) provide valuable information on the carbon footprint of a product / material and help to compare the impact of different materials in order to select the most sustainable solution for a project.

These product declarations can be used to assess the environmental impacts of a product or material as well as providing insights into the potential toxicity risks of a product or material, as well as its impact on land use changes or corporate environmental initiatives. As such, EPDs can play an important role in decision-making processes related to the procurement and use of products and materials. In order to make the most informed decisions possible, it is essential to review available EPD reports prior to selecting a product or material for use.

EPDs are used by potential buyers to understand sustainability and environmental impacts so they can make an informed decision on the products they’re considering. EPDs are commonly used by architects, contractors and indeed building owners who are environmentally conscious of the products or materials they will be using by providing accurate and complete information on a product’s life cycle impacts, including greenhouse gas emissions, water and energy use, and waste generation. Furthermore, EPDs can help manufacturers identify opportunities to improve their products’ sustainability profile. Whether you’re a business owner looking to move your company in a more sustainable direction or a consumer interested in making more environmentally responsible choices, understanding EPDs is an important first step.

EPDs are valid for five years and are generated according to the relevant standard. Construction EPDs are based on the ISO 14025, EN 15804 standards. EPDs are also voluntary in construction and manufacturing yet they are growing in popularity from public and private stakeholders who require more information about the products they are purchasing.
