My Voyager

Vitrabond aluminium cladding is an incredibly versatile building material. In fact, it is so versatile that an Australian artist based in Sydney used Vitrabond to create this incredible “My Voyager” sculpture in the Centrepoint Tower.

The project is the work of modern sculptor Peter Hennessey, who works exclusively with modern materials including plywood, steel and, now, Vitrabond. Hennessey wanted to recreate the Voyager as close to the original scale as possible.

Vitrabond was the perfect solution to create a sleek, futuristic feel whilst still offering versatility in moulding and shaping. The machining of Vitrabond on the Voyager’s dish and the arms is perfect and the artist spent hundreds of hours getting the perfect finish to the project.

The artist’s statement was that he wanted to help reinvigorate the public’s interest in space that has, sadly, declined in the years since Voyager’s launch with the famous golden record. The artist sees space exploration as the pinnacle of modern heroism – as it is an area of discovery without political or economic agendas. His aim wasn’t to recreate the Voyager but to “physically invoke it; to summon the spirit of the Voyager so that we might apprehend it as a physical object”.

For us at Valcan this project really showcases just how fantastic cladding is – lightweight, adaptable and aesthetically perfect for any design – be it art or architecture.
