Vyners School – “Best Use of Fibre Cement Cladding Panels”.

Vyners School was clad in 2019 using 1000m2 of Ceramapanel installed with a secret fixing system in 3 colours from the Natural Plus colour range. This was a great project to be involved in winning awards from LABC and RCI.

Noviun Architects’ design called for geometric lines within the Patina Copper panels, which was fixed back to the SFS substrate with a hanger subframe system. The brief identified intricate detailing between the render, Ceramapanel and rendered soffit areas. The intent of this design was to coordinate colours and finishes with the existing school building which is why the Ceramapanel colours were selected.

As the project was designed for a semi-rural environment, the Patina Copper panels were chosen to represent the colours of the natural environment in which it sat, the white rendered areas resulted in a clean yet subtle finish to the ground floor, plus the tan coloured Ceramapanel reflected the existing school and to mimic ta similar finish bringing both the existing and the new together on one site.

The Ceramapanel was installed to a secret fix carrier frame (similar to the Vitrafix VF3 system) using undercut fixings in the backs of the panels removing the need for visible face fixings as would be the case with a riveted system.

On Thursday 11th February 2021, the project received the award for Best Use of Fibre Cement Cladding Panels at the virtually held RCI Facade Awards UK 2020. In August 2020 the project received the Highly Commended award for Best Public Service or Educational Building at the LABC Building Excellence Awards event.
