The redevelopment of Units 19–22 Bilton Road at Kingsland Business Park, Basingstoke, forms part of a wider programme of investment to modernise and future‑proof existing industrial and commercial buildings. Known as Project Sceptre, the scheme involved a comprehensive refurbishment and recladding of the original structures, delivering a high‑quality, energy‑efficient facility now occupied by a long‑term tenant.
As part of the external works, a series of architectural entrance canopies were introduced across the principal elevation. These elements provide both functional weather protection and a strong visual identity at ground level, contributing to the overall coherence of the façade following the building’s transformation.
The canopies were designed as a coordinated architectural feature by Cornish Architects, each adopting an identical layout and construction detail to ensure consistency across the elevation. In total, four canopies were installed, each measuring approximately 18 m², delivering a combined cladding area of 72 m².
Valcan Vitradual A1 Aluminium panels were specified for the canopy cladding, forming a robust and durable solution suitable for a prominent external application. The panels were integrated into a fully detailed façade build‑up, incorporating VitraFix support rails and fixings to accommodate the cantilevered canopy geometry and ensure long‑term structural performance.
The canopy design demonstrates careful consideration of fixing density, panel alignment and junction detailing, resulting in a clean, well‑resolved finish that ties seamlessly into the wider reclad.
Installation of the canopies and associated cladding works was carried out by HML Roofing & Cladding Ltd, with the panels forming part of the broader envelope package delivered as part of the building refurbishment. The completed canopies now sit confidently within the elevation, reinforcing the building’s presence at pedestrian level while aligning with the wider architectural language established across the redevelopment.
Now fully occupied, Units 19–22 Bilton Road stand as an example of how existing commercial buildings can be reimagined through thoughtful design and high‑quality facade solutions. The integration of architectural canopy features using Vitradual panels demonstrates the versatility of the system in bespoke applications, contributing to a contemporary, durable and well‑executed external environment.
VitraDual is one of the few large format cladding panels that are truly 100% non-combustible achieving A1* to BS EN 13501-1. Also tested to BS8414-2 for fire performance of external cladding systems and compliant to BR135 requirements - certificates are available which include VitraDual in specific configurations.
